TEQUILA – From the beaches of Mexico to the mountains of the Vail Valley…

This is a very unlikely blog spot from a certified Beer Drinking momma…However I recently enjoyed a most lovely tequila cocktail and it stirred my interest… More about that fabulous cocktail later…. for now let’s take a trip South of the Border and get to know this liquor notorious for “shot slamming” and “viscous hangovers”.

Tequila is made from 100% Blue Agave and more precisely the “pina” from the agave plant, which can weigh anywhere from 80 to 200 lbs. The heart of the pina is stripped of its leaves and then cooked to remove the sap which is fermented and distilled.
Ok…that’s all well and good, but what about Blanco, Reposado and Anejo. Just enough varieties to confuse this blonde, overwhelmed mom. What flavor should I be drinking?? Help I’m confused!

Here’s the scoop:

  • Blanco-Silver is unaged and bottled within two months of distillation. Tasting notes include citrus, apple, pears, mint and pepper with an acute ending bite. Alcohol is more noticeable because it has not been aged. This is a great tequila for margaritas because of the crispness and citrus notes.
  • Reposado is aged between 2 and 12 months in barrels. This tequila has a light sweet flavor as a result of the time spent in the barrel. Flavors also include vanilla, honey, nuts, brown sugar and slight caramel depending on its aging time. The bite is not as harsh and ok for margaritas if you want to go top shelf. Rep’s can also go high class and be sipped out of a snifter or enjoyed on the rocks.
  • Anejo is aged between 1-3 years in small oak barrels and offer smooth flavors with an emphasis on dried fruits, spices, caramel, chocolate, vanilla tones and the alcohol sensation is masked by the wood. Another lovely sipping variety.

Ok…Now what’s the deal with Mezcal?? What is that all about?

So Tequila must be made in Mexico and be made from at least 51% Blue Agave . Most tequila aficionados only drink 100% agave tequila… Mezcal can be made from any type of Agave plant. It’s a common urban legend that Tequila comes with a worm in the bottle. This “worm” is actually a larva of a moth referred to as a gusano. In the 40’s a distiller named Jacobo Lozano Páez found that leaving the worms in his mezcal changed the flavor. People began to believe that finding one of these “tequila worms” was a sign of luck. Others believe that the larva is a sign of the potency of the drink. While most of these are simply urban legends many brands of mezcal have used them for marketing purposes.

Ok…how did Tequila get the hangover reputation…

Well as mentioned Tequila can be as low as 51% agave and the remaining percentage can be lower grade agave syrup, corn syrup, almond flavoring, caramel color and other additives. So as is with most liquor’s, the higher end and pricier liquors offer more refined distilling. This clean process is less likely to result in a headringing hangover. One of my favorite quotes is “ Pay for it now or Pay for it later”. When it comes to drinking… pay a little more for a better product tonight, so you don’t have to pay the porcelain God in the morning.

OK… I feel like we have covered the basics of tequila…just enough info to peak your interest and hopefully get you to try one of these amazing summer Tequila cocktails. Stop into BEAVER LIQUORS on Monday July 24th… National Tequila Day and enjoy 15% off all Tequila.
